Hi Aimee, my name is Aimee too! Mine is short for Amelia, hence the “AmeliaBedelia”. How did you go about training Fritz for therapy and what is the certification process? I also am a first-time Boxer owner and we are so crazy about this dog. I cannot imagine a day when I will not want to have a Boxer!

Welcome to DogGroups, FritzMom.

I too have a boxer boy given to me for my birthday and also in June but of the year before last!!!

Don’t forget to upload some pics so we can all meet your furry kid.

WOW, I didn’t expect so many to respond to my blurb! O-kay, first of all I didn’t really get him for my birthday. I bought him for myself for my birthday. I don’t know about the rest of you but after you turn a certain age you hope that no-one remembers so you can claim last years age again, and again. Anyhow, I’m sure that red isn’t that unusual a color for boxers. Maybe I made it out to be different than you thought. I guess that I have seen kinda like beige or blonde boxers like Dane color, but he is more mahogony(red). If you look at the boxer pictures, you’ll see. There ‘s a lot of them. He just started out biege-ish and I really wanted him more “red” and he just kept getting darker and darker. Anyway the whole certification thing is this. You need to contact an organization that does pet therapy. Let them know that you have a dog (or cat or whatever in some cases)and would like to have them evaluated for therapy work with kids, or elderly, or handicaped, whatever. These places are mostly volunteers so depending on the money they receive may or may not have a web site. Just check in your area. This stuff is volunteer so plan on spending time off the clock for this. It is rewarding though. Dogs have to be pretty well socialized to alot of different things. Hospitals and nursing homes can be pretty scarey places to a dog that isn’t use to seeing wheel chairs and loud machines, ect. Most org. are more than willing to put another face in the mix though. It’s one more day that a furry friend can like a hand or chase a ball for someone(mine just won;t bring it back).

The CGC thing has the test procedures online. Look under the AKC.

I have to tell you that my boxer is not hyper though! Everyone I know and form what I read says that they are hyper and whatever. I have none of that and he is only 8 months old. Is this unusual or myth that they don’t settle down? Thanks for the feedback.

Oh, I almost forgot. I got him outside of Manitowac. Both parents or pedigreed, but moms previous owner died so papers couldn’t transfer or somthing like that. We live near West Bend Wisconsin. Too bad about our Packers. We can’t stop loven’ em though!!!

Hi Aimee,

Yes, too bad about the Packer game. We have some rivalry in our family,

some of the Viking fans were rather happy about our loss.

Anyhow, I agree with you about Boxers and the hyperactivity subject.

Rocky is only 5 months old now, very playful and funny, but will settle down really quickly if I holler “SETTLE DOWN” Thats it…..he gives me those sad puppy eyes and goes and lays down! Simple as that! No problems here with hyper behavior over here.

I got my Boxer from a gal in Rice Lake area. So I guess we live rather far apart….I think Manitowac is around a 5 hour drive for me.

All the responses you got from your post…funny aint it? Sometimes I read a post that I find really interesting and no-one comments to it and other times the simple questions can generate so much response.

Yeah, We live pretty close to Milwaukee. We deal more with Bears fans. I guess you weren’t too upset when the Viking lost. Were you? I was elated!! Next year!

Anyhow, I do think that a lot of the out of controlness of these dogs is just because they can. If you don’t have some discipline, they will take advantage. I just took Fritz to his second round of obedience classes, day 2. The trainer says now lets work on hand signals. I’m thinking “great, I don’t really work on that stuff. He sits with a hand signal, sometimes.” I was so surprised! I put a flat hand down without saying a word and down he went. Maybe he was reading my mind ‘cuz I was saying “lay down, lay down, don’t embarass me ‘cuz I didn’t know you had to know that in this class”. Stay, stand, and come all the way through, he did it! There are no dumb dogs just dumb handlers.

Bye, Aimee

Hi Again!

Check this out.

http://www.greenacresboxerrescue.com

Maybe you have already seen this site. I have found the rescue to be very informative and very friendly people! Although, I have not adopted a dog from them, I check on the available dogs all the time.

As far as Obedience Training goes….good for you! I took my dog Jack to an 8 week class, he always won the ‘stay ‘ contest’s. Didn’t matter if it was ‘sit, stay’ ‘down, stay’. As far as the rest of it….he was AWFUL! LOL

The instructor worked with him and she had the same problems, so I didn’t feel so bad. He was just so overwhelmed with the class…..he would perform so much better at home, out in the yard and so on.

I learned enough from the class to ensure I would have polite dogs in the home. The routine is going great here, I can also use the hand signals with them…..I really didn’t have to do as much one-on-one training with my Boxer puppy. Because he really just followed Jacks’ leadership.

It is really cool! He even picked up all the hand signals…which I mostly use when my kids are napping or asleep for the night.

I’ve been on that sight before too! The only thing is that I can’t stop myself from looking at the adoptables, ya know. They are all so beautiful! Those solumn faces just call to me. I already have two kids and 3 dogs, but I always think what’s one more. Sounds like divorce proceedings, though.

Hello everyone..I am the proud owner of a White Boxer named WeeziePearl….once I figure out how to post her picture I will….lol…Boxers are great dogs no matter what the color…they are intelligent, loving, playful, comical, and full of ENERGY. I look forward to becoming a part of this community of dog lovers!![/img]

How old? Did you have her from a pup?

Another “boxer freak” here! My family thinks I’m a bit nuts. I had Roxies 1st birthday announced on the local tv news station and I have her portrait on my wall with my childrens. As for tricks, she will give you her paw and she knows her left from her right. We do crate her. She will go right in because she knows she will get a treat. Still working on pics.

Same with Fritz. He only gets the kong in the crate so sometimes he just goes in before I can say anything. He never goes in without a treat of somekind. Good another fanatic! You’ll fit right in.
